Research | Innovation through Cooperation: Compact Laser Sources for Additive Manufacturing
In the Pro FIT project SAMBA, Photon, in collaboration with the Ferdinand Braun Institute and SKDK GmbH, is ushering in a new era of lightweight manufacturing.

The SAMBA-Project represents a breakthrough in additive manufacturing by developing a direct and powerful laser beam source specifically designed for laser-wire-processing. This innovation promises to enhance the efficiency and precision of manufacturing processes while reducing susceptibility to errors. A key aspect of the project is the development of high-performance direct diode laser modules with a wavelength of 780 nm. This specific wavelength aims to optimize the absorption peak of aluminum, marking a significant advancement in the production of lightweight components.
Photon Laser Manufacturing develops specialized add-on components based on years of practical experience, ensuring a stable manufacturing process by optimizing the shielding gas coverage. A process-proximate cooling module, specifically designed for SAMBA, protects the optical components from overheating. The newly developed, compact quick-change protective glass module shields the optical components from contamination. SKDK GmbH, automating the entire manufacturing process, subsequently mounts the thus optimized process head onto a robotic arm.
SAMBA will demonstrate its efficiency first in the manufacturing process of sidewalls of high-speed trains. With the new technology, these components are set to feature a significantly reduced weight, highlighting SAMBA's unique potential for lightweight manufacturing and industries where weight reduction plays a crucial role.
