Innovation through cooperation: Compact laser sources for additive manufacturing

Photon Direktdiodenlasermodule auf Roboterarm und Detailansicht Lasermodul

In the Pro FIT project SAMBA, Photon, in collaboration with the Ferdinand Braun Institute and the SKDK GmbH a new era in lightweight manufacturing.

  • Integrated laser sources in the process head
  • Compact size and reduced weight of the laser source
  • Wavelength adapted to aluminum material processing
  • Optimized peripheral components for aluminum material processing
  • Automated manufacturing process through the integration of AI

The SAMBA project represents a step forward in additive manufacturing by developing a direct and powerful beam source specifically designed for laser wire processing. This new development promises to significantly improve the efficiency and precision of manufacturing processes while reducing the likelihood of errors.

A key aspect of the project is the development of high-performance direct diode laser modules with a wavelength of 780 nm. This specific wavelength aims to make optimal use of aluminum's absorption peak: a significant step forward in the production of lightweight components.

Based on many years of practical experience, Photon Laser Manufacturing develops special add-on components that ensure a stable manufacturing process by optimizing the protective gas cover: A process-oriented cooling module designed specifically for SAMBA protects the optical components from overheating. The newly developed, compact quick-change protective glass module protects the optical components from contamination. The optimized process head is then mounted by SKDK GmbH on a robot arm that automates the entire manufacturing process.

SAMBA will initially demonstrate its effectiveness in the manufacture of side walls for high-speed trains. Thanks to the new technology, these will be significantly lighter, highlighting SAMBA's particular potential for lightweight construction and industries where weight reduction plays a crucial role.

Photon Laser Manufacturing is proud to be part of this pioneering project, which is redefining the boundaries of additive manufacturing and significantly increasing efficiency, precision, and sustainability in the production of lightweight components. By combining innovative technology, technical expertise, and the strength of regional cooperation, we are setting new standards in the industry and underlining our commitment to excellence and innovation.

SAMBA is an "AMBER ProFIT Innovation" project and will be funded from 2023 to 2024 by the European Regional Development Fund. (ERDF) Co-financed by Berlin.
