For Stadler Pankow GmbH, Photon manufactures complete side walls,
end platforms and roofs of cars on a luxury double-decker panoramic train.
Crucial: The combination of maximum stability and aesthetics.
- Laser welding XXL (up to 25 m)
- Component design support
- Semi-automated manufacturing process for small series
- Extrem heavy steel construction with extreme material combinations
A matter of combination

Project details
Since 1990, the Rocky Mountaineer has traversed the still endless expanses of western Canada and the United States. The special feature: the panoramic windows that allow for a breathtaking, all-around view of the magnificent landscapes.
The production of the carriages is anything but simple: Maximum stability and safety are just as important as a unique aesthetic that is appropriate for the exclusive customer base.
Special challenges: the sheer size of the car bodies (approx. 25 m long) and the heavy steel construction with extreme material combinations (thin sheet metal with high profile thicknesses). A clear case for the XXL laser welding pioneers at Photon.
Photon specialists were involved in the construction of the components from the beginning. The necessary device technology and the semi-automated manufacturing process for the small series were also designed and implemented by Photon.
Photon pushes the limits of laser welding technology in the production of side walls, end portals, and roofs for car bodies produced by Stadler GmbH Pankow, both in terms of component geometry and in regards to tolerances and material combinations.
Where others would have failed, the Photon engineers and welders achieve outstanding results due to their experience and unbridled passion for the potential of the laser.
Which proves that with Photon, the path to the West is anything but difficult.
