For the 60 brand new ET 490 trains of the Hamburg S-Bahn (Bombardier),
Photon manufactures longitudinal beams and double-T beams and was also involved
in the development of the overall production concept (including training).
- Laser welding, deep drawing, etc.
- Consultation on component design for product optimization
- High requirements for flatness/straightness and aesthetics, as the longitudinal beams are installed in the visible area
- Welds invisible from the outside
ET 490 Trains

Project details
The 60 brand-new ET 490 trains of the Hamburg S-Bahn are not only more efficient and comfortable than previous models, they also look more impressive. The rail vehicle experts from Photon have a significant role in this.
By 2019, Photon will have produced longitudinal beams and double-T beams for a total of 180 wagon bodies. In addition to technical specifications, aesthetic requirements are also high, as the longitudinal members are installed in the visible area. This means: precision laser welding in 3D, and that for components about 12 m long, of course without any visible welds from the outside.
The finished trains are real showpieces and prove that Photon has solved these tasks brilliantly. But Bombardier Transportation also benefited from comprehensive Photon expertise in the field of rail vehicle construction in the development of the overall manufacturing concept and the design and optimization of components.
At the end, there is a real "Ah-HH" experience for residents and visitors of the Hanseatic city.
