Project details

Trains also need electricity at storage facilities and freight yards—for example, for the central computer. That is why there are separate extraction points there. But who consumes how much electricity and when?

Deutsche Bahn wants to know exactly—to enable accurate allocation and billing. The question is: How can a functional solution be found quickly and cost-effectively?

Enter Photon.

Photon combines many years of experience in the field of railway communications with in-depth expertise in the manufacture of charging stations for electric vehicles and also has the necessary certifications—a rare combination.

That is why Photon is already able to present its own innovative product after only a short time: an intelligent charging station that, for the first time, enables centralised and accurate monitoring through its integration into the railway's GSM-R network. Billing is carried out via the OCCP system, which is also used in charging stations for electric vehicles.

The Photon Elektrant smart ID is developed and manufactured entirely by Photon (with the exception of third-party components) – including its complex inner workings. Over the next few years, Photon will deliver numerous bright yellow Elektrants, thereby making an important contribution to the digitalization of Germany's railway infrastructure.
